08 -105 : ENGINEERING MECHANICS
PART – A
Answer all questions under Part A. Each carries 5 marks.1. State the Varignon’s principle and differentiate between moment of a force and a
couple.
2. A simply supported beam AB is subjected to a distributed load increasing from
1500 N/m to 4500 N/m from end A to end B. Span AB = 6 m. Determine the
support reactions.
3. Prove that the angle of friction is equal to the angle made by an inclined plane with
the horizontal when a rigid body which is placed on the inclined plane is about to
slide downwards.
4. Explain the theorems of Pappus – Guldinus.
5. Explain instantaneous centre of rotation. How can it be located for a body moving
with combined motion of rotation ?
6. Prove that the lowest point in touch with the ground of a wheel rotating without
slipping is the instantaneous centre of the motion of the wheel.
7. Explain D’Alembert’s principle applicable to curvilinear motion.
8. Explain the terms angular momentum, angular impulse and torque.

08-104 : ENGINEERING GRAPHICS (MNHTAB)
Instructions : i) Answer any two questions from each Module.
ii) Drawing must be neat and dimensioned.
iii) First angle projection to be followed.
MODULE – I
1. The vertex of a hyperbola is 30 mm from its directrix and the eccentricity is 4/3 .Draw the hyperbola and draw the tangent and normal at any point on the curve.
2. Construct a logarithmic spiral for one convolution. The length of the shortest radius
vector is 11 mm and the ratio of the lengths of the successive radius vectors is 6/5
for a vectorial angle of 30°. Draw the tangent and normal at any point on the curve.
3. A line AB inclined at 30° to VP has its end A 15 mm and end B 50 mm below HP.
The length of its elevation is 60 mm and its Vertical Trace (VT) is 7 mm below HP.
Draw the projections and determine the true length of the line, inclination with the HP.
Also locate its Horizontal Trace (HT).

08-104 : ENGINEERING GRAPHICS (MNHTAB)
MODULE – I
1. A wire unwinds itself from a drum of 50 mm radius. Draw the locus of the free
end of the wire for unwinding through an angle of 360°. Draw a tangent and
normal at any point on the curve.
2. Draw one convolution of a logarithmic spiral, given the shortest radius as 1.5 cm
and ratio of radius vectors enclosing an angle of 30° as 7 : 6. Draw tangent and
normal at any point on the curve.
3. A line PQ, 75 mm long has its end P in HP and Q in VP. The line is inclined at
45° to VP and 40° to HP. Draw the projections and locate the traces.
